Smoked Porter. Picture the scene in 1587 of Sir Walter Raleigh, intrepid explorer, back from the New World to his home in Islington, showing off his latest discovery of tobacco, and as he demonstrates the ritual of ‘smoking’ to the small dignified crowd on Upper St, revelling in their amazement as smoke is released from his mouth……..his servant, thinking he was on fire, runs up and throws a tankard of ale over him!

Cask at the brewpub. Opaque black / dark brown coloured pour with a lasting mid tan head. Aroma is nutty ashy roast coffee, roasted barley and some choc and smoke. Flavour is composed of semi sweet caramel, ashy roast, chalky, roasted barley. Palate is a bit thin and lacking, moderate carbonation, quite sweet. . Bit lacklustre, maybe a little sweet. Lingering caramel and ashy roast. Some milky coffee. OK.

Cask at the brewpub. Pours rich brown with a frothy beige head: the nose holds nicely smoked dark malts, a bit of cocoa. Medium sweet flavor with moderate earthy bitterness, some burnt meat, more smoke, baking cocoa, dried fruits. Light to medium bodied with fine carbonation; good condition. Finishes somewhat dry with notes of burnt grainy bread, burnt grass, dry smoke, chalky cocoa, earth. Pretty decent.

Cask at the brewpub. Opaque black - brown beer, tidy tan head. Palate is smooth and semi dry. Modest fine carbonation. Mellow dark malts with mild to medium smoke. Touches of roast.and dark chocolate. Litte dark fruit tang. Light semi dry finish. Overall a mellow and drinkable smoked porter, hangs together well.
