Bottle from Appellation Wines. Appearance - opaque black with a lovely fawn head. Nose - sweet malt and cereal. Light milk chocolate. Taste - light chocolate but more toffee and caramel. Creamy. The ginger and clove thing kicks in right on the finish. Palate - light to medium bodied with a creamy texture and a fairly good finish. Overall - a bit thin and just about in stout though definitely has elements of Mild.

Bottle from Baxters Whisky Shop, Fochabers. It pours darkest brown with a decent bite head. The aroma is roasted malts, chocolate, treacle, toasted marshmallows, cinnamon, ginger and orange peel. The taste is bitter, rich roasted malt, cocoa, Jamaican ginger cake, cinnamon, orange, tangerine peel, festive spice and a touch of alcohol warmth. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Was pretty impressed with this for a spiced beer.

Cask at the 2016 National Winter Ales Festival, The Roundhouse, Derby. Brown pour with a beige head. Bags of sweet spice and toffee in the nose. More of the same in the flavour. Not bad at all.

500ml bottle. Darkest brown colour with weak, ruby red glimmer and average, thick, frothy, fairly lasting, minimally lacing, beige to tan head. Rather cautious, roasty dark malty, minimally spicy aroma, hints of dark chocolate, liquorice, a touch of cinnamon and ginger. Taste is minimally soapy spicy, roasty dark malty, notes of ginger, a touch of liquorice, weak orange zest and cinnamon overtones. Somehow those spices seem to bounce off from the glass-hard, dark malt body. OK.

Bottle at Craig’s. Pours clear ruby dark brown with a head. Aromas are earthy, ginger. Taste is very thin, light spice. No real stout character.
