An old classic tweaked to be fuller bodied, with hugely satisfying results. Alnwick Brown Ale is brewed in the tradition of historic Tyne and Wear brown ales. A beautiful deep reddish-brown, the flavour is complex with hints of dried fruit, and a lovely hop balance. A credit to the North East!

Bottle picked up at the brewery. It’s not brown. It’s a medium amber. Slim lasting off white foam. Nose has yeast and dark honey. Some nuttiness. Taste is dry and lightly bitter with a honey like sweetness on the lips. Pretty thin overall. Thin dry finish. I enjoyed my visit to this place and the server on the day was (I think) the brewer, but to be honest I didn’t get on with the beers at all, this one included.

Bottle from Northumbrian Gifts. Appearance - deep amber to brown with some red chinks. Big fluffy off white head. Nose - hazelnuts and predominantly toffee. Taste - bread, light nuts but mainly toffee. Palate - close to medium bodied. Creamy texture. Finish, a little sweet. Overall - a decent example of the style.
