Bottle from John’s Wine and Spirits, St Ives, Cornwall. Brownish-black with a large craggy beige head and an aggressive fizz that rather detracts from the smooth beer behind. Fresh oranges on the nose; on drinking there’s a little marmalade but rather more sweet breakfast grapefruit. There’s chocolate and spice and soot behind, more soot than I like in fact. There’s a mild hop bitterness and some dryness in the finish. Quite nice overall but could do with less fizz and soot.

Bottle from the Bottle Bank. Appearance - dark brown and opaque with a big foamy head. Nose - chocolate orange and pine. Taste - dark chocolate with a citrus note that lies somewhere between orange and grapefruit. Palate - close to medium bodied with a creamy texture and a fairly good finish. Slightly on the side of stout rather than ipa. Overall - it peaked on aroma but a good beer all round.
