The Scottish Ale category is at least as diverse as the Pale Ale category but tends more towards malt flavours, whereas Pale Ales tend to be more hop-forward. Scottish ales can range from light amber to dark brown in colour, dry to sweet, low alcohol to high. This year’s Auld Skool sits towards the bold end of things. Full-bodied and malt-forward, this re-vamped re-release is a bold brew of pale malt, crystal malt, roasted barley, a touch of wheat malt and Sterling hops. With bold coffee-like aromas and an off-dry finish, Auld Skool Scottish Ale has an ABV of 6.25% and a BU of 20 – making it the perfect brew to enjoy on a cold (or in Vancouver’s case, wet) day.

Draught at St. Augustine’s, Vancouver
Brown color, cloudy, with small head. a caramel based brew, the aroma being a bit stale, with light sweetness, and some dust.
Balanced, drinkable, nothing special though.

Bottle. A taster in the beershop beside the taproom. Hazy frown with a tan head. Aroma is sweet mash. Flavor is more Weizenbock than ale. Sweet, burnt sugar, ferment on a grainy finish.

650 ml bottle. Pours a very dark mahogany with very light head. Aromas of grass, biscuits, and mashed grains/wheat. Flavors of malts, burnt sugar, peanuts, and wheat. An odd Scottish.

On tap at the Alibi Room, pours a dark orange amber with a small beige head. Aroma brings out toasted malt, light toasted caramel, and biscuity malt. Flavour brings out toasted caramel malt, bready notes, and some spicy hops. Surprisingly well-crafted, with a very well-balanced flavour profile. Finishes on dry, semi-sweet caramely, and spicy notes. Great beer.
