Why make one delicious collab beer when you can make 2? An indulgent chocolatey Imperial Brown Ale brewed with our Canadian friends from Bellwood’s Brewery in Toronto, Moose Fang was designed to be finished 2 ways. Half went straight to keg as a young, punchy dry-hopped IIBA. The other half we ran to freshly-emptied Armagnac barrels and squirreled it away in our cellar. Boozier than your grandmother’s Christmas cake, mellowed in wood for 6 months, infused with dried fruit, then cocoa nibs, vanilla pods and fresh orange zest. A smooth, complex and totally grown-up BA Imperial brown.

At ratebeer best pours out dark brown almost black topped with a tan head. Nose is chocolate roast malts pine hops and barrel notes. Taste is more of the nice rich roast malts some coffee pine hops and barrel. This is not like any other black ipa I have ever had. Very good.

Tap at Ratebeer Best. Pours a very dark brown with small beige head leaving spotty lacing. The aroma is roast, dark chocolate, wood, licorice. Medium body, roast, cocoa, wood, light bitter finish, very good.

Mother Kelly’s. Keg. Clear deep red - amber - brown beer, a few pale tan bubbles not forming a head. Palate is light, mildly dry and has a modest fine crispness. The dark malts are quite mellow and bring a little dark chocolate and roast. Nicely integrated Armagnac, mildly fruity and with a touch of bitter wood. Light dry finish finds the Armagnac becoming more obvious. Warming and slightly spicy afterglow. Nice one but not that hoppy for style.

500ml bottle. Darkest brown colour with small to average, thick, creamy, fairly lasting and lacing, beige head. Chocolately, dark malty aroma, mild notes of coffee, hints of mocha and Malaga ice cream, some cocoa, a touch of vanilla, treacle. Taste is moderately sweet chocolately dark malty, notes of cocoa, orange flavoured milk chocolate, a nuttily touch, some vanilla, Malaga ice cream, something boozy seems to be around; slightly bitter, roasty dark malty finish. Oily texture, smooth, soft, creamy palate, full body. Complex, diversified and evolving. Hard to classify into a style category - not hoppy enough for a Black IPA.

Bottle at Vienna tasting February 2016. Many thanks! Not much CDA left here. It is assertively bitter and also some grassy resiny hops flavour remains, but only a little. Otherwise it is a really good enjoyable barrel aged beer with lots of caramel and vanilla and a bit of coconut as well.
