Steeped in lore and tradition, this special annual brew can be enjoyed now or cellared to further mature. Mahogany brown with a vast shattering attack of malt, hints of raisin, vanilla and a bitter sweet chocolate finish. This well aged ale (8 months in oak) is a great finish to any dining experience or simply by itself.

Best enjoyed at cellar temperature.

2018-01-25, bottle from The Gull, North Vancouver, 6-4-6-3-12=31
Brown color, medium head, not very persistent. Aroma of Strong Ale (some malt) with apple. Medium body strength, some caramel, light sweetness, bourbon, a bit sour, the barrel gives some apple taste.
Quite chaotic, and dubious.

2017-12-17, draught at Parallel 49, Vancouver, 7-4-7-3-15=36
Brown color, clean. Nice aroma, but also smells like those oxidized barley wines. Sweet and fruity, dark fruits, raisins, plums, a bit sour, whiskey, with a thinner finish. Like an Old Ale, quite good.

Poured from 500mL bottle [2017]. Dark brown with dissipating beige head. Aroma has lots of bourbon and chocolate and dark fruits. Taste is quite different - sweet fruits, light caramel malt, mild tartness, bourbon gets hidden amongst everything else going on. The aroma was quite good, but the taste did not deliver.

500mL bottle, pours a deep dark mahogany with a small off-white head. Aroma brings out lots of toasted caramel, bready malt, dried dark fruits, and light oak. Flavour is along the same lines, with dark dried fruits, toasted caramel and bready malt. There's some tartness that kicks in with each additional sip. Not really detecting any barrels at all. Very malty and with quite a lot of depth. Decent stuff, despite the tartness.

Bottle. Medium brown, with a thin head. Aroma has some sticky, toffee notes on the aroma...light alcohol. Fruity, toffee, with a vibrant acidity. Tasty, completely different. It's taking on a life of its own, gaining character with the deep fruitiness, the light stickiness...fun.

Taster at the Parallel 49. Leftovers from the barleywine festival that took place 10 days ago. Pours an almost black with a tan head. Aroma is bourbon and chocolate, very nice. Taste is surprisingly sweet and sour with lots of fruity, bourbon and some boozy notes. Hm, kind of disappointed - the view and aroma is so good, but taste... Come on guys, you definitely could perform better brewing this.

On tap. Pours a dark brown with moderate head. Aromas of brown sugar, caramel malts, dark fruit and oak. Flavors of green oak, sweet caramel, and sweet raisins. Almost vinous. A little long on the oak - off balance...
