The Rev. James ales are based on an original recipe from 1885, and named in honour of brewing legend the Rev. James Buckley, saver of souls and satisfier of thirsts. Brewed with our exclusive Buckleys yeast, they each deliver a signature taste with a surprising twist.

The Rev. James Gold is crisp and sweet with fresh fruit flavours that are balanced by an intriguing depth and a light malty aroma.

Cask at Bird In Hand, Stafford. Pours a slightly hazy gold with a small foamy off-white head. Floral hops to the fore in the aroma along with hints of malts and yeast. In the mouth it is quite sweet with a creamy texture, but with a little underlying sharpness. Floral hops and malts again in the flavour along with grains, lychee and tangerine. Some hints of spice too after a while. Finish is dry and a little sticky. This is decent – but not as good as the Rev James Original.

Half-pint, cask ale at Hogarths. Bright amber coloured body under a patchy head, Clingy lacing. Grainy malts on the nose. Bread-like malts to the taste profile, citric hints beneath. Mild resinous bitterness to the finish. Clean in the mouth. Fair enough. (Swansea 01.10.2018).

Pint of cask at the Cowper Arms. A lovely gold in the glass and some lacing. No real aroma, but there was a harsh citrus sourness to the beer. It definitely wasn't off, but it did dominate the profile. My sister and brother-in-law gave up and got Doombars, but I persevered and finished off my sister's beer too. It was a very different flavour for an English real ale and I am still in two minds as to whether or not I actually enjoyed it. I'm still thinking about it......
