You would be pardoned for thinking the No. 19 bus, connecting Battersea Bridge with Finsbury Park via Islington, is just another innocuous London Bus, but it could possibly be the most famous route. Not only does it take pride of place in the first line of the Clash hit ‘Rudie Can’t Fail, it is also mentioned in the Dire Straits song “Wild West End” along with featuring in a 2007 edition of Voque “one of the 14 most stylish locations in Britain”. However, we think its best point is that it links Brewhouse & Kitchen, Islington and Brewhouse & Kitchen, Highbury.

Cask at the BrewPub. It pours darkest brown with a quickly dissipating beige head. The nose is earthy, toasty, sweet treacle, liquorice, umami and dark fruits. The taste is bitter, surprisingly light, earthy, burnt toast, charred wood, umami and salted liquorice with a dry, toasty finish. The aroma is OK, but it tastes rather weak and insipid. Not keen on this juan.

Cask handpull at the brewpub. Nut brown / reddy coloured pour with a lasting loose off white head. Aroma is toasted nuts, bit of wood, hint of choc and pinch of smoke. Maybe a little green apple of the nose as well. Flavour is composed of nutty malts, wood, tangy green apple. Maybe a little oxidation and past its best. Palate is medium light with lowish carbonation. Light woody roast, toasted bread in the finish. OK.

Cask at the brewpub. Pours clear amber with a creamy tan head. Toasty bread in the nose, damp earth. Light sweet flavor with ripe berries, mild roast and cocoa, subtle scorched earth. Light bodied with fine carbonation; decent condition. More earth and roast, toasty bread, burnt grass, dried berries. Not bad.
