The Rev. James ales are based on an original recipe from 1885, and named in honour of brewing legend the Rev. James Buckley, saver of souls and satisfier of thirsts. Brewed with our exclusive Buckleys yeast, they each deliver a signature taste with a surprising twist.
The Rev. James Rye is dark, dry and distinctive, brewed for a full flavour and bitter finish with unexpected glimpses of citrus and spice.

Bottle. Red. Nice head. Aroma of roasted malts and something like cherries. Taste is roasted malts, rye, bready, biscuit, spicy, nutty, fruity, earthy and lemons. Mellow. Just a hint of bitterness. Medium carbonation. Very balanced, very delicious. I’d like to be able to drink this regularly.

Bottle from Waitrose. Deep chestnut in colour, with a decent, off-white, head. Sweet, caramel and bready malts, with a hint of chocolate. The malts also had a slight earthiness, leading to a moderately bitter finish. Good.

Bottle from Booths, Media City. Deep reddish purple with a thin head. Has a malty-sweetness, but a light one as the rye has a good grainy influence and there’s a lowish bitterness to found in the ale too.

50cl bottle from Waitrose, Wokingham. A deep reddish chestnut colour with a thick cream head; spicy aroma with both hops and rye; smooth in the mouth with some rye bread and caramel to start; and then a pleasant spicy bitterness, with a touch of citrus towards the finish. Rather good.

On cask at the Haymarket. Appearance - deep ruby with a decent head. Nose - burnt toffee, perhaps burnt jam too. Taste - light biscuit and more burnt jam. Palate - close to medium bodied with a tangy texture and a long dry tangy yet crunchy finish. Overall - interesting bitter.
