The Rev. James ales are based on an original recipe from 1885, and named in honour of brewing legend the Rev. James Buckley, saver of souls and satisfier of thirsts. Brewed with our exclusive Buckleys yeast, they each deliver a signature taste with a surprising twist.
The Rev. James Rye is dark, dry and distinctive, brewed for a full flavour and bitter finish with unexpected glimpses of citrus and spice.

500ml clear bottle; BB 31st Jul 19. Poured into a UK straight sleeve pint glass. Good clean and clear mahogany body, off-white crown. Aroma and taste is dominated by the Rye content, some decent hop action gives some late bitterness and balance out the Rye/Malty sweetness. Liked it.

500ml bottle bought at a Tesco store. Shared with Finn. Upper part lacing from a stable fawn-coloured head. Deep mahogany coloured body. Malt-fruity aromas, bread and dried fruits. Taste fine with spiced fruits, bread and light malty sweetness. Smootly roasted ending. Quite alright. (Hotel room, Swansea 04.10.2018).

500ml bottle. Poured a clear amber colour with a frothy white head. The aroma is grainy malt, yeasty, light floral hop. The flavour is moderate bitter with a light crisp, dry floral hop bitter palate and a lingering bitter finish. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. A bit one dimensional and sadly I didn’t really like that dimension!

Bottle at home in Hackney - sourced from Waitrose. Pours clear ruby-copper with a frothy, light tan head. Toasted grains in the nose, hints of caramel and brown sugar, aged berries. Light-medium sweet flavour with moderate leafy-earthy dryness, some further aged, leathery berries, toasted brown bread, burnt grain, more caramel, grapes. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Fairly sweet finish, with hints of oxidation, well toasted leaves and brown bread, more earth, more leathery berries. So so overall.
