Small patches of lacing on the glass. Aroma of malt, caramel and hops. Medium to full body with flavors of roast malt, caramel and fruity hops. The finish is sweet with a malty aftertaste. 22 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 10/16/2014. Pours slightly hazy ruby red color with a 2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big caramel, toffee, toast, brown sugar, brown bread, nuttiness, raisin, plum, fig, date, apple, herbal, floral, light peat smoke, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready malt, herbal spice, and fruity yeast notes; with great strength. Taste of big caramel, toffee, toast, brown sugar, brown bread, nuttiness, raisin, plum, fig, date, apple, herbal, floral, light peat smoke, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Very minimal herbal/earthy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toffee, toast, brown sugar, brown bread, nuttiness, raisin, plum, fig, date, light peat smoke, and herbal/yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity and robustness of dark/bready malt, herbal spice, and fruity yeast flavors; with a great malt/yeast balance and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very smooth, moderately creamy, and lightly slick/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is and excellent Scotch ale style! All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt, herbal spice, and fruity yeast flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A very enjoyable offering.
