Iain Hill’s Darjeeling IPA is an ongoing experiment. This is the third time it’s been done. Caskival ’07: Cloudy amber. Nice balance of earthy hops, light crystal malts and slightly fruit, slightly malty darjeeling. Heavy tea taste, quite tannic, maybe better balanced then the last one but not bang-on yet IMO. Because of the tannins, I still find it works quite a bit betteron the nose than the palate. May I suggest a Keemun Brown or Lapsang Stout in the future?

Dix Mardi Gras ’07: Cloudy as hell because one of the brewpub employees accidentally upended the cask. Bright, juicy blood orange and tangerine aroma at first; to which strong darjeeling notes emerge later in the glass. The tea comes through on the palate right away, though. In terms of the bitterness is has a bit of that oversteeped character, which alongside the hop bitterness does it no favours. The bright citrus hop character rides shotgun while sweet pale malts take the edge off, but the earthy, tobaccoey darjeeling character is stronger than all. Finishes very dry, and completely dominated by tea. Interesting, but it may take a tea that doesn’t oversteep to make this work, or a much sweeter beer, anything to reduce those tannins.
