This gigantic Triple Black IPA is a celebration of 15 years of Black IPA brewing starring some top IPA pioneers (Stone Brewing & Firestone Walker Brewing) - a nod to beer history with a modern edge.

"In my days at Stone, I had a blast creating what became our first widely distributed Black IPA while at the same time, Matt at Firestone Walker was crafting their own. Jeremy and I went on to brew a few more, and Matt's team did the same. In a sense, Obsidian Jam feels like getting the band back together to brew a beer that is a throwback to some of the best collaboration days we've had in craft beer while using more modern ingredients."

Pint can, courtesy of @SHIG, pours with a dark mahogany colored body that supports a tan head of foam that leaves behind some spotty lacing. The aroma offers up pine like hops blunted by some dark roasted malts, a touch of baker's chocolate and then a thin cloud of dark fruity esters and booze. The taste delivers both pine like hop bitterness and modest malt roastiness as well as chocolate malts and a hint of nuttiness. Toward the finish there is a nice sweet dark fruity ester jamminess that shows up along with the booziness creating a well rounded experience. Solid offering. The CDA love is real.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a very thick, four to five centimetre tall light brown head that seems to stay afloat of the pretty opaque (due to the colour) body nicely. Aroma of roasted malt, a bunch of sweetness, caramel, oatmeal, resinous hops, pineapple and a nice kick of pine and alcohol at the end of the nose. Medium to Full-bodied; Very rich roasted malt notes are very nice and provide great body while being pretty clean, also the caramel and toffee provides a great layer of range and support for the piney and grapefruity hops which show some bitterness at the end, along with some deep alcohol, too. Aftertaste is pretty clean for the style and alcohol content here, with a nice kick of sweet, but not cloying, caramel, rich toasted malts with some vanilla noticeable at the end, but the hops and alcohol are strongest here, in a good way. Overall, a pretty nice beer and a good collaboration with the best part about this one being the malt bill that provides a great backbone, while being very easy-drinking and not bitter - great to try fresh, locally! I sampled this sixteen ounce, pint-sized can, purchased from Costco in Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia on 23-February-2023 for US$3,25 ($12,99/four pack) sampled at my house here in Washington a few blocks away on 16-April-2023.

Can at SHIG place tasting, thanks to SHIG, 15/04/23. Black topped with a big old khaki head that stays for the show. Nose is earthy roast, liquorice, charr, dried red berries, pine needle. Taste comprises bitter roast, spice, cocoa powder, pine resin, charr, dried red berry fruits, cola cubes. Medium bodied with bite, fine carbonation, semi drying close with an earthy scrub allied to a good spattering of dusty hop bitterness. Solid big and ballsy high boost CDA.

Gawt-DAMN what a black IPA. Huge waves of tropical-citrus and dank notes lead to a moderate chocolate middle laced with grapefruit zest and berry, finished out by pine and coffee and roast. Easygoing texture doesn’t give a hint of the massive ABV. Just a brilliant beer.
