Double Oatmeal Brown Ale with Vanilla and Hazelnuts

King's Head is our double oat brown ale brewed with a large portion of malted and unmalted oats, Maris Otter, and specialty English chocolate and crystal malts. It was fermented with an expressive English ale strain and then transferred into fresh Kentucky bourbon barrels, where it continued to age for 19 months. The 2020 version was infused with vanilla and hazelnuts.

500ml (thx, Alex C. for getting it!) shared with George @ 🏡 Appearance: dark brown with a beige head. Aroma: bourbon, hazelnut, chocolate. Taste: along the same lines, not very thick, moderately sweet, a lot of nuts. Nice chocolatey finish. Overall: pretty good.

On tap at Brouwer's. Dark brown, thin head. Hazelnut vanilla wafers. Sweet but balanced, lots and lots of intense dessert stuff.

On tap at Elizabeth Station, pours jet black with a small light brown head. Aroma brings out molasses, caramel, some toasted nuts, and a little vanilla. Flavour is full of toasted hazelnuts and bourbon barrels upfront, followed by intense vanilla and syrupy caramel. Decadent and syrupy palate without being too cloyingly sweet. Very nice.

On tap at the brewery. Pours near black with a chestnut brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has nice hazelnut with a bit of bourbon, vanilla and sweet dark grains supporting. Flavor has a great hazelnut note supported by dark grains, light vanilla and a bit of bourbon.
