The Barbe Rouge hop is a recently developed varietal from the research centre of the French hop growers' co-op. The hop's ancestors include the fruity and spicy Strisselspalt hop, which has been the backbone of French beers for centuries. Barbe Rouge is more suited to modern tastes, emphasizing the berry and other red fruit characteristics.

On tap. Pours a bright gold color with light head. Aromas of perfumey toasted malts. Flavors of grass, a little mould and more perfumed toasted malts. Not sure what this is.

473mL can, pours a clear golden with a small white head. Nose is concerning, with lots of farty sulfuric notes, a strange earthy hop character, and bready malt. Flavour is unfortunately no better, with lots of farty sulfuric notes, bready malt, and a weird herbal hop character. Way too sulfuric. Problematic.

Poured from 473mL can (pkg 2023.10.18). Clear blonde gold with small white head. Seemed doughier on tap (didn't rate at the venue 3 days ago, but preferred it there, was a very different experience), a bit of an odd spicy leafy berry hop that's quite in your face. Okay. The tap experience was more balanced, doughier with less Bam! from the unique hops.
