Cask at Alexandra, Derby – though I’ve had it several times before. Pours a very dark reddish-brown with a small off-white head. The aroma has roast malts and dark fruits. In the mouth it is slightly sweet with a fruity texture. Roast malts and liquorice to the fore in the flavour, plus some traces of cola. Finish is fruity. Decent, but lacking anything that makes it stand out from the crowd.

Handpull cask at the Salmon, Leicester. Mid- to dark brown, translucent with a loose off-white head. Light chocolate and coffee aroma with touches of blackberry. Bittersweet, chalky taste with slight sourness in the finish. Decent porter but a bit ho-hum.
