Anniversary blend of barrel-aged imperial stouts and Belgian quadrupel.

Second Press is Private Press' second anniversary blend, and was inspired by the fusion of barrel-aged stouts and Belgian-style quadruple. I started the blend with a barrel that held First Press for an additional 14 months and then added four barrels of stout to solidify a rich Ovaltine and chocolate-covered caramel base. I wove in fifty gallons of the Ripple In Time blend, bringing forth notes of dark cherry pipe tobacco and cola. Finally, I filled a fresh rye barrel with the Second Press blend to be used next year in Third Press.

Blend:
Axelrod (barrel #054) aged 30 months in Willett barrels
First Press (barrel #139) aged 14 months in Buffalo Trace Experimental barrels
Duke (barrel #192) aged 12 months in Elijah Craig barrels
Duke (barrel #199) aged 12 months in Bliss barrels
Adderley (barrel #211) aged 12 months in Woodford Double Oak barrels and 8 months in George Dickel 17-Year barrels

Bottle, 500 ml, courtesy of Eric. Shared with him and MiroB. Black with small tan head. Nice intensive chocolate, touch of fruit, great bourbon, almost no heat. Medium sweetness. Great.

500ml bottle. Smooth, slightly tart and complex with loads of maltiness, barrel notes, oak, molasses, toffee, prunes, figs, vanilla and cocoa. Quite complex and tasty.

Poured from a 500 ml bottle. Aroma is malt forward with lots of chocolate, caramel, toffee and lighter roast, toasted bread and burnt sugar notes. Hints of tobacco, leather, raisin and prune. Light oak, bourbon and alcohol notes. Pours black with dark brown hues on the edges with a small, medium thick, mocha head that recedes quickly to the edges where it lingers. Light lacing and long legs. Flavor is fairly sweet with loads of malt character. Tons of chocolate, caramel and toffee with lighter notes of roast, toasted bread and burnt sugar. Moderate bitterness and medium alcohol warmth. Hints of tobacco, leather, raisin and prune. Light oak and bourbon notes. Mouthfeel is full bodied with a light creaminess and medium low carbonation. A bit sticky with light astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, a really nice beer. Great malt notes with well hidden alcohol. Barrel character is nice.

Bottle, shared at a party (but I drank most of it as they were wine people :)). Pours almost black, clear with a medium tan head that is slow to dissipates and laces well. Aroma is full of bourbon, vanilla, fudge, marscapone, toasted caramel, just a touch of figs and a bit of a coriander note. Flavor is medium sweet, light plus bitter. Medium plus body. Muted, yet complex.
