Shepherd Neame’s original recipe, the India Pale Ale followed in 1870. The beer style’s origins are rooted in the creation of a heavily hopped beer that would withstand the rigours of arduous journeys to the colonies. A true IPA, it is full bodied, malty and balanced by a mouth-watering hoppy palate and a glorious fresh, spicy aroma. It is hopped at four stages of the boil, with two varieties of Kentish hops – Fuggles and East Kent Goldings.

Goodmans Fields Spoons. Cask. Clear gold beer,.small white head. Palate is light and dry with modest fine carbonation. Light minerals. Eggy sulphur yeast. Light pale malt and a touch tangy bitter floral hop. Dry finish. Meh!

Cask at The Tichenham Inn, Ickenham. An amber coloured pour with a medium white head on top. Vague hoppy, malty aroma. Tastes vaguely hoppy, malty, bitter. Shepherd Neame are incredibly mediocre, always have been, I should have known better!

Wetherspoon Beer Festival. Bright amber in colour with a thin head. Fairly malty but has a spicy kick in the palate with a medium lingering bitterness.

Pint at the Parrott, Canterbury. Appearance is amber, with a prominent foamy white head, leaves quite a bit of lacing. Aroma- bitter hops, malt, caramel and toffee. Taste is lots of hop bitterness, pronounced maltiness, raisin and caramel hints. Ok overall.

4.5% version. Kings Head Shadoxhurst. Clear amber lasting white head. Actually quite good. Aroma of faint pear drops but then this bitterness just grows. Very decent. Good even. Nice bitter
