The base of this beer is a blend of our Award Winning Imperial Stout and Barley Wine aged for 16 months in Cognac and Bourbon Barrels. It was then blended with an Abbey Quad aged in Tawny Port Barrels, and further Barley Wine to become Hanging Gardens.
Hanging Gardens opens with aromas of baker's chocolate, demerara sugar, and molasses. Dark berries hit the palate shortly after, with some mild tannins and flavours of fig, almond, and oak.

Dark brown, no head. Decent port/cognac aroma, fruity, touch of roast. Big body, soft, fruity, balanced with alcohol coming in late. Mellow dark malts. Good layers of complexity. High quality brew.

473mL can. Pours black with a beige head. Bourbon, cognac, blackberries, and boozy barley on the nose. Flavour has a really nice mix of boozy flavours: sweetness from the port and cognac and harsher booziness from the cognac and bourbon. The base is very nice as well, full-bodied with a great malt character from the stout and the barley wine. There is also a blackberry/blackcurrant tartness as well. A very well-orchestrated cuvée.

473mL can, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma has plenty of cognac, port barrels, dark dried fruits, and caramel. Flavour is rich, with lots of cognac, port barrels, dark dried fruits, caramel, and some molasses. Lots of port, cognac and dark dried fruits. Lots of nice maltiness and the barrel blend works real well. Very nice.

Tasting at Ryan's, can
Chocolatey and bready, with dark fruits, and alcohol warmth; this is the liquid version of some sort of Christmass pudding; a bit too much roasted character for me. It's messy, but drinkable.

Poured from 473mL can (2023 vintage). Near black with small beige head. Woody, raisin, cognac and port (especially the port) is more prevalent than the bourbon, the blend of different styles is a bit of a mish-mash that doesn't know what it wants to be. Thinner-medium bodied. Would generally think they should just choose a road and stick to it instead of blending everything, but I've tried the individually styled Howe Sound beers, and would say blending them does taste better when taking into consideration the base beers. It's decent.

16oz @ Ryan's shared with Alex. Appearance: dark brown with a beige head. Aroma: some dark fruits, sweetness, oak, and a bit of meaty notes. Taste: along the same lines, moderately sweet, noticeable charred barrel notes. Overall: pretty good.

473 ml can. Pours a very dark brown with short tan head. Aromas of dark caramel, chocolate nougat, soft bourbon and sweet bready malts. Flavors of toasted malts, nutty chocolate, flat bourbon, cognac/spirits and raisins. Smells like it should be really sweet but comes across quite dry. Quite tasty…
