Sweet Barley Wine. Captain’s Log: They say there are no smells in space, but the alluring scent of caramel, yellow fruits, and nuts came at us through the hull of the ship, pulling us into its sticky embrace. By one final effort we managed to pull away from the intoxicating enticement of Zaccharine.

Bottle. Aroma has malt, caramel, mild tart and yeast. Taste of sticky malt, raisin, ripe fruit, caramel and mild hop. Nice, but really sweet.

Danish barley wine on the ’lighter’ side of the spectrum, bottle from Bierenplezier in Almere. Moussy, dense, medium thick, pale greyish beige head over a hazy burgundy coloured beer with purplish hue. Perfumey bouquet of caramelized sugar, blue plum, blackcurrant, fig, dough, brown rum, raisins, tea leaves, some fried chicken somewhere, hint of iron, pear, white pepper, ruby port, dry earth, old cake, bitter orange, hint bayleaf, yellow grapefruit peel, cinnamon powder. Soft, rounded, sweet onset, lots of residual brown sugar sweetness along with hints of raisin, candied fig, pear and blackberry, sourish hint, softish carbo, full and supple, vinous mouthfeel; thoroughly malty middle, caramelly sweetness blended with a nutty, toasted, bittering edge which in the finish is further enhanced by a herbal, earthy, spicy hop bitterness of medium long duration as well as some warming, rum-like alcohol and a light earthy yeastiness. Well-composed in terms of flavor, sweetness is positioned nicely against bitterness, but not the most complex example of the style I had and I wonder if it would not benefit from a bit more ’cleanness’. I don’t think this will age all too well either. Still, in this form, a perfectly enjoyable and accessible English style barley wine.

Draught at KØ16. Very sweet flavour, sugary with a lot of malt syrup. Cloudy amber colour. Small tan head. Much too sweet, but tastes all right, I guess. Does not taste of artificial sweetener, though.

Bottle on the goddamn train still. Pours brown with a thin off-white head. Do I smell BBQ? What’s going on? Dried fruit, caramel. Shit, my stop. I finished this on the platform like a boss.

An amber beer with a lazing beige head. The aroma has notes of malt and caramel. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, alcohol, dextrose, alcohol, and caramel, leading to a dry sweet finish.
