Finally getting around to enjoying this gift… Nagahama Barrel Aged Beer 7% This dark Belgian ale sent 3 months in bourbon barrels and poured a dark black with a thick dense beige foam that left no lacing behind. It has quite an enticing aroma of sharp dark cherry, vanilla, bourbon and oak. Soft mouthfeel and medium body. I paired it with 72% cacao dark chocolate which really the Ghana chocolate accentuated the roasted notes, the 72% Ecuador gave me chocolate covered ba a notes abd the 72% Venezuelan chocolate gave silky truffles and bourbon flavors. On its own you get dark berries and bourbon. Really smooth and definitely one of the best I’ve had from Nagahama. Fun pairing to boot.

Bottle from Liquor Mt. Nose is caramel, toffee, vanilla, also slightly strange over-ripe fruit, strawberries, chocolate. Dark brown with lace. Falvor is dark chocolate, toffee, vanilla, a touch of coffee, cream, strawberries, cola. Pretty crazy flavors coming that I did not expect. It's quite strange but also pretty fun. There is a candy-like element, but it is balanced by a strong roastiness in the finish. It does not scream bourbon at all, though the caramel and vanilla notes probably come from the barrel. I get a bit of oak too. It should be fine-tuned, but a nice start. Hope they start doing this with their own whisky barrels.
