An all-sorghum beer. New Grist, a beer for Celiacs brewed from sorghum and gluten-free yeast grown on molasses.
New Grist is the first “official” gluten free beer in the U.S., although it cannot technically be called “gluten-free” until established governmental guidelines are determined for all products claiming “gluten-free” status. In the interim, this Celiac-safe beer can be called “barley-free,” and is a welcome product to those who need to live on restricted diets due to intolerance to gluten, a protein found in common brewing grains such as barley, wheat, rye, oats, spelt, kamut and triticale.

It pours an extremely clear golden yellow color and leaves the same colored body with a slim half finger white foamy head that immediately dies within about twenty seconds, carbonation is seen rising at a moderate pace. The aroma is based around lemon juice coming through in a bland yet somewhat earthy funky sort of way, could be construed as offensive, but really not bad to me. In the taste, the lemon juice is back with some apple cidery and a somewhat ginger sort of puckering aspect to it, and then the aftertaste hits me bad, as its basically a harsh sort of lemon/apple juice that basically nails your tongue to the bottom of your mouth. There also isn’t any finish. Its super easy on the palate and the carbonation just assaults my mouth and tongue more so than any AIPA could ever do, but the way it assaults it is just plain bad. Overall, I would not have this again, and it makes me feel bad for those who have to drink this. My suggestion is to have a Widmer’s Omission before this.

Bottle: Pours slightly hazy, pale gold with a soapy, white head. Scent is lemony, grassy. Taste is sweet, lemon/citrus...honey.. Almost like a sugary fruit beer. One of the better tasting gluten-free beers I’ve tasted.

Bottle @ home, picked up at Wilbur’s Fort Collins. Pours a hit hazy, light straw yellow appearance with a small white head. Lemony, a bit tangy, slightly sweet, cake/grainy, almost salty like aroma. Kind of twangy, lemon poppyseed bread flavor. Almost a bit tart. Kind of watery. Slightly candy-like flavor. Hope I don’t develop Celiac disease anytime soon.

Stolen from my temporarily gluten free room-mate: Pours really pale yellow. Aroma is all weird like... smells like a bastardized pale lager, which I guess it is. Hard for me to classify the difference. Taste is very minimal. Watery with a kind of candy finish. No hops to be found. Kind of sweet.

Bottle - My first gluten free beer. Sweet apple juice with a bit of yeast. Pale clear yellow with no head. Very sweet and dry but I still taste apples. More like a cider than a beer. Not as bad as I expected with the reviews, but not really a beer.

Bouteille 355ml.

Not a bad beer overall, just different. Kinda reminds me of a cider brewed with champagne yeast. An ok beer, but much better than most of the "gluten free" beers I’ve tried.
