An all-sorghum beer. New Grist, a beer for Celiacs brewed from sorghum and gluten-free yeast grown on molasses.

New Grist is the first “official” gluten free beer in the U.S., although it cannot technically be called “gluten-free” until established governmental guidelines are determined for all products claiming “gluten-free” status. In the interim, this Celiac-safe beer can be called “barley-free,” and is a welcome product to those who need to live on restricted diets due to intolerance to gluten, a protein found in common brewing grains such as barley, wheat, rye, oats, spelt, kamut and triticale.

Smells like gingerale. Taste has a sour mash kind of thing going on that’s cloying, generally bad. Only reason I’m finishing this beer is I just drank three Coors lights and this is slightly less offensive. Pours pale, lagerlike with a surprisingly durable head and lacing. I put that down to the sorghum. First gluten free beer I’ve tried, hopefully it won’t become a habit. Bottle.

Bottle. Very pale and clear yellow, white coca cola head. Aroma of straw, white pepper, citrus. Taste is bitter lemon. Not very beer-like, but tasty enough.

Bottle: Poured a super yellow color beer with a small white foamy head with minimal retention and not much lacing. Aroma of light unrefined grainy notes. Taste is quite light with some more or less pleasant notes of unrefined grain. Body is light with medium carbonation. Not need to revisit his one unless I have to stop eating gluten.

Originally rated October 2009. Written it is brewed during the second week of September 2009. Ingredients: water, sorghum, rice and hops (no wheat or barley) so the beer is gluten free. Pretty high 5.7% ABV though. Pours a light golden colour with a soapy head, thin big bubbles, dirty lacing that gives it a micro feel. The carbonation started with huge bubbles and then, converted to medium-size ones, but still very active. Smells more like a cider than a beer. No, not like apples, but the malt and yeast aromas that a cider gives off (with a little apple juice in the back). Mild tart mouthfeel, but not really crisp and refreshing (like the front label says). Bland taste of apples and rice. Thank God for not having gluten allergies. Not one I will have again (but have to finish this 6-pack).

Pours pale clear yellow into a shaker. Bright white head recedes to skim surface leaving spot lacing. Grape children’s medicine aromas. Sour tropical fruits and medicinal flavors from front to back. Lasting sour/bitter finish.

Bottle. Pale yellow with a weird bubbly white head. Aroma reminds me of apple juice with an odd sour yeast undertone. Flavor is rather bland, tart, almost vinegary. Lingering aftertaste I’m at a loss to describe. I couldn’t finish it... drain pour.

12 oz. bottle, $1.50 loose @Lemon Tree. So, I don’t have to like this, but imagine this is suddenly one of my few options. Pours a nice, light yellow with a thin head, almost reminds me of a Bud Light. Smell is hard to describe; a bit of sour mash and hay, perhaps. But the pudding’s in the tasting, and here goes: A touch of sour apple. Very light–what I have to call–"malt" taste. Can’t find out if sorghum undergoes any process similar to malting, but it does keep in a touch of cereal grain. Cidery, but pleasantly not sweetened from adjuncts, and no fusels like a malt liquor. Really, I could get to like this if I couldn’t have regular beer. I know I’m damming with faint praise, but I wouldn’t turn down another one!

Poured from 12 oz bottle. Aroma is like eggs, sulfur, and rice. Appearance is like a clear yellow lager but with no head at all. Taste is kinda gross but not horrible, flat with sour notes. I was interested to try, maybe I shouldn’t try every beer I think would be interesting.

A light golden ale with a thin white head. Aroma is watered down c-hops, not bad, but leaving you on your thirst. Perfumey notes develop. In mouth, a sweetish acidic and hoppy ale with perfumey hops, oily mouthfeel, light solvent note. I have tasted worst, but I wouldnt buy a six pack of these. Bottle from LCBO Kirkwood/Carling, Ottawa, 2$.

Bottle. Pale gold body, clear, with a fizzy off-white head that disappears. The aroma is malty sweet with notes of candy, honey, corn and pepper. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. The finish is lightly sweet and lightly bitter. Light body, watery texture and lively carbonation approaching fizzy. A pepperiness in the flavor makes you think there’s a touch of clove behind the sweet taste. My first thought was this is like a watery, below average tripel. This beer could use some hops to balance the sweetness.
