An all-sorghum beer. New Grist, a beer for Celiacs brewed from sorghum and gluten-free yeast grown on molasses.

New Grist is the first “official” gluten free beer in the U.S., although it cannot technically be called “gluten-free” until established governmental guidelines are determined for all products claiming “gluten-free” status. In the interim, this Celiac-safe beer can be called “barley-free,” and is a welcome product to those who need to live on restricted diets due to intolerance to gluten, a protein found in common brewing grains such as barley, wheat, rye, oats, spelt, kamut and triticale.

12 oz bottle purchased as a single at Olive or Twist in Platte City, Missouri. Apr WK1 notched on the label. Pour is clear pale golden with a one inch white head that falls really fast. Aroma of floral honey, mild butterscotch and mild lavender perfume. Not a bad nose, just sort of weird. Taste is honey and chemical sweet white grape. The cloying chemical sweetness lingers well into the finish. Palate is thin medium, watery, yet oily mouth coating and more or less flat. This was almost like a watered down mead. Not real enjoyable, though I suppose this is targeted for folks with limited options, beerwise.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a pale straw yellow color with a small white head that faded quickly. The aroma was faint with notes of rice and corn. The flavor was mild but bitter, tangy, tart and a little grainy with undertones of beets and rhubarb. The finish was short, tart and bitter. Bland yet odd.

Thanks to buckybeer for this one! Clear pale yellow with an average sized fleeting white head. No aroma. No flavor. It’s wet. Glad it wasn’t infected.

Bottle forcibly shared by maniac because, well, I just had to knock out this style IMMEDIATELY even though I can get this beer at the store where I spend 40 hours a week at 20% off at any time! I do really appreciate the gesture, though. Peach/copper color with floaties, which was unexpected. Fizzy, quickly dissipating head. Fruity aroma with a touch of caramel. Taste is nearly identical. I’ve had a couple other gluten-free beers, and this one isn’t bad.

Re-rate 1/14: Bottle sample at a tasting at Mastikim. Thanks beerandbeyond. Hazy yellow. Aroma of cider with apples and a bit of cereals. Slightly sweetish and slightly tart flavor with apples and a bit of cereals. Very light-bodied. Tastes like a bad cider. 4/2/3/1/6=1.6

Bottle (thanks Amit). Sweetish aroma with some fruitiness, adjuncts (well, duh) and a bit of honey. Sweetish grainy and a tad metallic flavor with quite a lot of carbonation and a very light bitter finish with hints of hops. Pretty lousy, but if I couldn’t drink any real beer I could’ve found it drinkable. 4/3/3/2/7=1.9

Pretty neat aroma of saffron, hay, and honey. Clear yellow with a thick frothy head. Stronger than expected taste, reasonably sour, harsh mouthfeel. It tastes of honey and lemon, but mainly sour apple. This is very good, and I can’t understand some of the other ratings. It’s too carbonated perhaps, but it tastes great.

Bottle. Pours yellow, lotsa bubbles, an inch of rapidly fading white head. Smells like wet dog, wheat, and grass. Flavor of... uh, lemon and grass, but not much else... hell, not much of any flavor.

This is my first sorgum beer. Interesting sterile medicinal aroma, reminds me of the smell when you walk into a hospital. Pale yellow ubiquitous lager color and appearance. Looks very sparkling in the glass. Sterile taste carries over to the flavor. It departs from the normal beer flavors to something I’ve never encountered in a beer. Not bad. Certainly this is better than many ’normal’ beers I’ve had. I guess I would not mind drinking this once in a while. It is missing something that is present in most beers. Flavor all its own. Has a finish that is not really bitter but it is not well mannered either. Not as bad as I anticipated after hearing others speak of sorgum brews.

Much like a pale lager, clean and crisp, somewhat bland, but for a prominent lemon-citrus quality that appears in both the aroma and flavor. Straw color. Potable.

Cloudy yellow. Big bubbles. Aroma is massive sorghum, some apple juice. Body is fairly full. Flavour is very sorghumy, with apples and alcohol coming in late. Pregunta - how much gluten do hops have that they had to be omitted from the recipe? Yes, it’s not brewed for me but damnit even Celiacs need hops in their beer!
