Part of a flight (as the 20th Annual Grand Cru, at 10% ABV) on 10th Dec 2019 in the Laguna Hills BJ's. Light amber, no head. Sweet malty nose and taste, boozy and interesting.

Marked as 18th annual special 2017 version. Pale and clear. Tap BJs boardman. Nose has no hint of the alky content within. First taste is somewhat boozy but more behaved than expected. Not in yer face like so many other so called grand crues. Warming sensations down the throat. Some leather, some saddle. Some something else. Slight medicinal finish but overall it hides its alkyt pretty well for such a high abv brew.

Sampled on draft this beer poured a slightly hazy caramel color with a medium sized foamy orange-white head that left a bit of lacing. The aroma was musty with honey, cracker and faint golden fruit. The flavor was yeasty and fruity with honey, cracker and hints of black pepper, medicine and perfume. Long finish with a bit of booziness coming through. Moderately full bodied. Ok but disappointing.

Poured up on tap at the Mesa, AZ location with a clear gold body that supports a thin white head. The aroma offers up sugary prunes and peach and a light amount of dates to go along with some Belgian yeasty spices. The taste starts smooth and soft with plenty of sweetness that heads quickly into sweetened spicy Belgian yeastiness. To midway the fruity esters jump forward where I’m getting peach, pear, apple and a sense of dates, honey and light boozy chemical notes that take this into the finish. Nice sipper.

Last beer in the flight and easily the 2nd best beer of the night. Surprisingly since I have lost a little interest in Belgian strong ales but this one wasn’t overwhelmed with clove. Instead the nose was all sweet bubblegum and banana, flavor similar phenols, maybe only a hint at clove. Sweet alcohols. Golden color. Could use a little more carb but thats nitpicking.

[ As BJ Grand Cru ].Clear medium orange yellow color with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, white to off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, pale malt, moderate hoppy - yeasty, flowers, perfume, tropical fruit. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet with a long duration, sweet sugary fruit, alcohol. Body is medium, texture is oily - creamy, carbonation is soft to flat, finish feel is light alcoholic. [20140516]
