Original rating from 2011 deleted, then the beer was added after all. Taster at Bavarian Lodge. Opaque yellow, thin head dissolving to a ring on the edge. Smell is a slightly smoked Gouda with cranberries in the cheese. NOT a bacon bomb like the usual Schlekerla. A second sniff offers notes of strawberry and other fruits, so there’s some complexity there. Taste is still of a very smoky beer-and it doesn’t help that the guys sitting next to me just got served a sausage appetizer plate, though that’s a great idea for an accompaniment. But there is also some tart cherry and red wine to follow after. A citrus note of 7-Up, also in the carbonation texture. It’s easy to see that you could grow to love or hate this combination. My opinion changes with each sip, but in the end, that Bamberg smoke wins.

Tap. Pours clear Amber, almost no head. Aroma is smoky, tart cherry, funk, rubber. Flavor is about the same, vinous, a bit rubbery. Medium body, some zesty bitterness.

Glass at Beermongers. Pours a cloudy copper color with a medium white head. A big smoky and woody nose, vinous. The flavor is super complex, really two beers, but it works: smoky, sweet malty flavors, sweet almost sticky white wine. Unusual mix but damn nice.

Tap at Cannibal. Crazy brew so much tastes to decipher. Pours orange with brownish tinge. Nose is smoke and wine residue. At first you get that Schlenkerla bacon campfire smoke but then its lots of jammy zinfadel really coming through and soften the harshness of original brew. There is also some other red fruits, hops bitterness and hay. But mostly your bowled over by Zin and Ham in a delicious way
