Single bottle from HyVee, Ankeny, March 15. Just a whiff of BBQ smoke in the bottle. Even when I poured up a bog head, smoke did not overwhelm my nose. Clean brown ale on the bottom, frothy, spongy head. Taste is an easy-drinking brown ale, although after the first few sips, the smoke does come out until we’re in Bamberg territory. A bit of sludge left behind in the bottle. I’m thinking with a light alcohol punch, this could stand up to a little more malt, would would in turn hold some more smoke, since I’d want some contrast with any smoked meat I have with this. My only regret is that I am not having this with BBQ, but this does suggest it needs to be enjoyed fresh. And it was raining today, so I had to boil hot dogs instead of grilling.
