Originally developed in the late 1700’s, British breweries would send beer via sail to the troops and British expatriates in India. With a whopping hop aroma and finish, married to dry but full maltiness this ale will remind you of those traditional ales. The copper color, East Kent Golding’s hops and moderate carbonation add to its authenticity as a English IPA.

tap at the brewpub last summer - Pours copper colored with a white head. The aroma is mainly hops with a bit of citrus. The flavor, as expected, is mainly hops but frankly the hops aren’t all that great. I’m not sure if it’s a quality issue or what. The malt balance is alright and the finish is appropriately bitter. Not much character here.

Clear slightly copper glow with a VERY large, soapy tan head that leaves an ugly lace. Aroma of light yeast, alcohol, cardboard and a very small amount of malt - no hops at all in the nose. Medium-bodied; Effervescent mouthful with a pungent kick of hop pellets up front with a unbalanced malt note, some cardboard, some funky yeast and a little residual sugar in the mix. Aftertaste has a little hop note, a touch of the bitterness prevails with a little cardboard and off-tasting malt note. Overall,a pretty unrefined IPA with a bunch of cheap hop pellets thrown in the mix without a need for body or malt. Tastes like a homebrew beer with a lot of hops thrown in for good measure, but ends up being unbalanced and very bubbly. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Siciliano’s in Grand Rapids, Michigan on 06-November-2010 sampled at home in Washington on 28-March-2011.

Bottle thanks to blutt59. Pours with a small white head and a hazy golden body. Aroma of honey and light hops. Taste is bitter, malty and faded. Light bubbles and dry.

Bottle generously provided by coyotehunter. Pours a dingy brown with little head and pitiable aromas. A bit of bitter hops and light malt is about it. Flavor is also a swirl of weak flavors might qualify as an English IPA, but not a great one. There’s some toffee and a bit of bitterness, but this is just not that great.
