Goose Island has once again collaborated with Beer Historian Ron Pattinson and legendary London Brewer Derek Prentice for Black Eagle: No. 1 English Barley Wine. Black Eagle is a recreation of recipes from 1666-1989. Made at Goose Island’s brewery in Chicago from a blend of two batches brewed 9 months apart. The first being a 9 month barrel aged beer and the last third a fresh batch. This gives the beer the same aged beer character in aroma and flavor, while keeping some aspects of an unaged beer.

Bottle. Color: Lightly hazy amber, very thin beige head. Aroma: Malty, caramel, figs. Taste: Malty, caramel and fig notes, floral hop backbone. Moderate sweet and light going towards over moderate bitterness. Medium body, low carbonation. Dry-ish finish. Nice old English style BarleyWine.

Amber, slight haze. Thin head. Softish caramel malts. It's got a thinnish character. With the abv, this seemed like it would be English-style, but this is not getting there with that lack of body. So there's some potential but it's okay.

500mL bottle, pours clear burgundy with a small beige head. Aroma brings out toffee, bready malt, and a touch of brown sugar. Flavour is light on the palate, with bready malt, toasted caramel, and brown sugar. Lots of bready malt and toasted caramel. Not particularly complex but it's fine.

Poured from 500mL bottle. Clear copper with small off white head. Mild toffee malt, some feint dark dried fruit notes, a touch boozy, above average.

500mL bottle. Pours cloudy amber with small off-white head. Sweet, caramel malts, and light herbal grass on the nose. Flavour has bitter herbs, burnt sugars. Light body, cut further short with the acrid finish. I think not bad for a light barley wine, but still not a huge fan.

On tap at Fulton location. Pours orange gold with small off white head that lasts. The aroma is dark fruit and toffee. Slick body, licorice, raisin, toasted malt, light booze, very good.
