Continuance is our series of blended Imperial Stouts, Barleywines and other Spirit Barrel-Aged beers. Blend #2 consists of threads which include single barrel-aged M.J.K. which were aged in oak for 32 to 33 months, and was then finished on a light addition of Mexican and Ugandan vanilla beans and fresh ground cinnamon.

To wrap up this initial round of Continuance blends, we now bring you Blend #2. As we sat down to blend M.J.K., we had all of these beautiful Barleywines in barrels in front of us. In that moment, we began what has become Continuance TWCP and now Continuance Blend #2.

Blend #2 is a blend composed of the M.J.K. (Mash #1 & #2) recipes Single Barrel-Aged for 32 and 33 months in Willett 4-year and Willett 8-year Bourbon Barrels. At maturity, we sat down and blended all of the M.J.K. components and earmarked them for their eventual paths.

These single barrel expressions were chosen for their barrel complexities and characteristics as we ventured into the realm of adjunct Barleywines. We had always planned on creating a cinnamon and vanilla bean Barleywine, and we were pleased when these barrels serendipitously reached their peak maturity allowing us to finally execute this experiment.

The result is a very delicately spiced Barleywine. We thoughtfully allowed the beauty of the M.J.K. recipes to shine through, however, we had the pleasure and joy of using our adjunct know-how to lead our palate. We fresh-ground cinnamon and added it at a rate that is about 40% that of Ambiente. We sourced our vanilla beans from Uganda and Mexico and used them at a rate of about 50% that of Derivation Blend #13. The result is a thick and sticky vanilla Barleywine with a cinnamon backbone.

We hope you have enjoyed this new line from Side Project and we look forward to continuing down this path again in the future (after we knock out a Derivation or two!).

Bottle shared by ClarkVV--thanks, Clark! Opaque, dark brown with light viscosity, no head, no lacing. Aroma is strong caramel, cinnamon, bourbon, fruit. Taste is strong vanilla, caramel, bourbon. Smooth texture, smooth carbonation and finish as taste. Nice!

750mL bottle drunk 8/9/25.
Clear, dark, no head.
Lots of adjunct and good fudgey malts with fruity bourbon and light lead. Adjuncts come together. No booze.
Bright, spicy, lead forward and full of whiskey. Vanilla softens with mild cinnamon and light oak. Sweet and soft. Juicy and rich.

Typical side project barrel aging which I don’t love as it’s a bit too dry and tart for me. But still nice dark fruit, dried fruit, the palate is amazing super low carbonation. Nice barrel and modest oak but honestly it doesn’t show the depth I wanted
