Keeps out the Cold
Shot through with Royal and Naval history, Allsopp’s was commissioned by Queen Victoria to brew a beer for her ships to take on exploratory expeditions to the Arctic regions. The result, Arctic Ale, was brewed to 11% to prevent it from freezing and even now it is the definitive drink for keeping out the cold.

tasting notes
Its colour is a rich brown, and its flavour is suggestive of old Madeira. Almost ‘still’ and, indeed, has never been very effervescent, although not at all flat.

Cask at Bradford CAMRA Beer Festival 2024. Pours hazed copper orange with pale tan foam. Aroma: Caramel, toffee, dried fruits. Taste: moderate+ sweet with lighter bitterness, dry on the palate. Medium+ body. It's quite different from from most modern barleywines. Less fruity, more dry. Nice to try this.

Cask @ Kirkstall Brewery Tap, Leeds. Hazy dark amber with a thick frothy-creamy head. A slow sipper but its strength is palatable as it's relatively smooth for something in double-digits, and it only has a very mild sweetness, allowing some bushy-floral notes through.
