Draft at The Cock, Hackney on 3 August 2013. Poured a bright, slightly hazy amber with a thin white head. Aroma of pine, orange peal, unripe berries and just a hint of chocolate. Grapefruit hop flavours with some toffee and cocoa. Ends with dry, grassy hops.

Keg at the cock tavern. Sweet strawberry aroma. Vibrant orange colour with a thin persistent head. Flavour is clean bitterness. Crisp carbonation. Some chalkyness.

Draught at Captain Cook, Östersund. Cloudy amber, small head. Rich sweaty grapefruit aroma. Sweetish with full body and clean, rounded mouthfeel. Fruity with salted peach candy. Very bitter finish. Big and bold.

Draught (Pipes of Scotland, Uppsala) - Hazy amber with a foamy head. Pine, grapefruit, cocoa and dried fruit in the aroma. Hoppy and bitter taste with grapefruit, dried apricot and cocoa. Not as chocolatey as I was expecting, but enjoyable all the same.

Aroma: Hard candy and toffee apple.
Appearance: Hazy amber body with a medium off-white head that slowly fades. No visible carbonation. Nice lacing.
Taste: Sweet candy and toffee. Very hoppy with a bittersweet taste. I didn’t detect any chocolate flavour, but the beer I tried before this one was Tryst’s Double Chocolate Porter, so maybe that’s why.
Palate: Medium body with an oily texture that eventually leaves a sticky mouthfeel.
Overall: Really hoppy, American flavours. Would like to try this again.

Tap at the Euston Tap - 16/11/12. Hazy amber with a good bubbly white head that retains well. Nose is pine, hops, light grapefruit. Taste comprises pine, bitter grapefruit, light chocolate notes, sweet candy. Medium bodied with soft carbonation leading to a dry finish. Decent stuff and the chocolate was well integrated without overpowering.

Aroma - Floral aromatic hops, getting a hint of the chocolate mixed up with fruity malts, some barley sugar orangey malts in there, unusual
Taste - Orangey malts, citrus hops, very resinous hops on top of a subtle background of sweetish cocoa, works because the flavours are easily differentiated. Extra mark here for being totally bonkers so its 8
Palate - medium carb and body, bit acidic. Finish - quite dry, hoppy ipa goes to a chocolate linger then some long lingering dry hoppy bitterness. Like the chocolate here.
Overall - The experiment worked. A crazy idea that’s a good beer.

Euston Tap. Very hazy amber beer, good white head. Crispy minerally palate. Creamy malt. Mildly citric hops - a little orange and a touch of mango. Medium bitterness. Aaaaaaaand Chocolate! It’s there in the background - more milk chocolate than dark chocolate. Citrus bitterness returns, some marmalade. Crispy finish with semi sweet fruits and a medium bitter linger. Really didn’t think this would work but it’s great! Very inventive and deftly executed.

Keg at the Euston Tap. It pours cloudy golden amber with a thin off-white head. The nose is pine, resin, floral, orange, tangy marmalade, dough and chocolate. The taste is bitter pine, orange, tangy marmalade, grapefruit, resinous, light spice, toast, earth, filter coffee and chocolate in the background with a bitter finish. There is a chocolate orange thing going on that I rather like. Medium body and moderate carbonation. The chocolate malt certainly adds to the body. Interesting, well-balanced and flavoursome. Sounds bizarre but they have made it work somehow.
