A red rye ale featuring an American clean tasting yeast to showcase the Centennial and Columbus hops. Each cask is dry hopped with both of them to enhance the aroma. A small amount of rye malt lends a spiciness to balance the beer. It is named after a Whitstable landmark, the Red Spider Cafe, now sadly long gone.

Bottle at home in London - sourced from Mr. Butler, online. Pours clear, deep amber with a frothy beige head. The nose has a lot of juicy, oily pine, ripe orange, citrus rind, toasted grains. Light to medium sweet flavor with rich, toasty bread, light caramel, ripe and gooey citrus fruits, pine, bitter grass, light tobacco ash. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Resinous on the finish, with a bit of hard bitter grass, earth, toasted grains, more tobacco. Honours the style well.

Keg at mother Kellyโ€™s. Hazed dark orange, amber coloured pour with a lasting creamy head. Aroma is earthy grains, red Berry, musty, mineral, subdued. Flavour is composed of brown bread, toast, cranberry, little earthy metallic, grainy. Palate is medium light bodied, higjish carbonation. Little hint of smoke adds nicely to the complexity.

Cask gravity at Wallington 2014. It pours cloudy mahogany brown with a decent bubbly beige head. The nose is piney, resinous, red grapefruit, jammy fruit and light caramel. The taste is pretty bitter, earthly, resin, some astringency, varnish, jammy fruits with a drying finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Nice punchy hops and tasty jammy character.

Cask gravity at Firkin Ale House Folkestone. Clear deep mahogany. Pnw hop aroma. Good malts. I mean itโ€™s a kind of American amber. And itโ€™s ok. Bit burnt but ok.
