Thanks to markwise for this one. Is this really an imperial barleywine? Not sure what that means. 12oz bottle pours amber with copper edges and tan head. The aroma is rich with apricot infused pine hops, some mango and more pine hops at the end of the draw. The taste is pretty nice with pine hoppiness that gets sticky with maltiness. To midway and into the finish a mild level of tropical fruitiness joins in too. Nice bold pine hop forward barleywine.

Bottle. Pours a lovely color... a kind of gold and ruby mix with little head. Aromas are sweet, fruity and boozy. Alcohol is fairly obvious, even in the nose, and sticky sweet honey and toffee malts dance around with the peach and mango fruits. Flavor is pretty similar... lots of sweet... lots of fruit (pear comes to mind) and lots of booze. This isn’t a booze explosion like I thought it might be, and I’m rather enjoying it after hiding the bottle in fear for a couple of months. Imperial Barley Wine just sounds so spooky...

Does anybody else find the name of this stuff amusing, or at least possibly, quite redundant? Smells like sweet candy when spilled on the desk. Loks darker and cloudy but not dark brown or black. Cloying, rude and nasty alkohol impact; on style. Over the top and down the other side; wew. Had a kasteel cuvee at 11+ the other day and it was terribly more palatable for this lager lover. Smacks of ignoramous. Finish is but what else? Wallop bang pow. Barley wine lovers around the world should rejoice and try this bitch.

Bottle from Total Wine in Roseville, CA. Pours dark amber with a rapidly reducing tan head. Rich malty aroma with some dark fruit notes. Flavor is brown sugar with some anise. Perhaps a bit of hop, but it’s definitely not bitter. I’d say its rather sherryish right now, to include the unthickness of the body. Wowser.

12oz bottle. Deep ruby red-brown color. Thin, patchy head. Big alcohol laced toffee and piny hop aroma. Brutal and big, but rather drinkable still. Not quite as cloying or resinous as some of it’s stylistic counterparts. Still large and in charge, this one slowed me down. Classic Barleywine in most respects, solid execution.

12 oz. bottle, pours dark amber with a small beige head. Aroma of dark fruits (plum, raisin), sweet toffee and caramelized sugar. Flavour of plum, raisins, caramel malts, candied sugar - though not terribly complex to be honest. Finish leaves a dark fruity flavour - alcohol is barely detectable. Good, though sub-par for a barley wine.

Copper coloured body with a very thin white head and a ruby glow. Aroma of sweet sugars, pit fruits, raisins, malt, metal and quite a bunch of alcohol. Full-bodied; Strong assertive malt and alcohol shows through with pit fruits and nuts following soon afterwards. Strong finish with vanilla at first, then a bunch of alcohol and pit fruit flavours. Overall, a good barley wine - perhaps a bit too strong and unrefined, but still pretty nice! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased earlier today at Oliver’s Beverage in Albany, New York, sampled at my in-laws in New Paltz, New York on 04-September-2010.

Bottle. Mahogony beer with a dark cream colored head. Big toffee aroma. Toffee and malt flavor with light fruitiness. Medium-plus bodied. Toffee and dark fruits linger with light burnt sugar.
