Brewed with flavorful hops and seductive malt, our Newcastle Winter IPA hearkens back to the original India Pale Ale recipes of the 1700s. A balanced body, warm mouth-feel, and long, bittersweet finish make it the perfect beer for the season. It's zesty yet subtle, strong yet creamy. If only winter could last just a wee bit longer.

335ml bottle - another of those who saw the bottles and thought "I’ll give that a go..." Pours a ruby red brown, about half a finger of white head, plenty of malt in the nose. Not a bad start. Felt like an ESB at first rather than an IPA. A tiiny first taste lets it down big style, with a funky after taste. Very average.

Location: Draft at Texas Arizona, 2/10/12
Aroma: The nose is really dull, light notes of yeast, corn, and a little fruit
Appearance: This one pours a clear orange color with pretty much no head or lace
Flavor: The flavor is mild as well, lightly corny, minimal citrus presence, and pretty much no hop presence
Palate: The body is light-medium, it has a dull, mediocre mouthfeel, and comes off a bit on the watery side
Overall Impression: I was fairly disappointed with this one. This one dreams of being a mediocre IPA. Honestly, this has to be one of the worst attempts at this style I've ever tried. There really isn't anything IPA like about it.

Had this on tap at 1 for the road. They told me it was only available on tap, evidently an untruth. A little darker than a pale lager. Smell is a little like an old lager. Taste is somewhat like watered down homemade wine. Very little co2, nearly flat. Fairly easy on the buds. Some bitterness builds but this probably is not really an ipa by craft beer standards. If it is, I hate pa, and this is probably one of the better tasting ipa I hhave ever had; its medium light bitter and overall well behaved. heheh, definately not on style, does not even approach apa in style. More like some kind of lager I would say. But hey, I’m not a beer expert, what do I know.

I was sent some of this by Newcastle’s USA PR firm, along with some schwag to give away in my blogs. So yes, my partiality may be somewhat compromised. First, i see that despite the Newcastle name, it’s not brewed at the same place as Newcastle currently is done, but in Scotland. That might account for the more Scots style, almost peaty malt taste. So. From a bottle, it kicks up a nice big brownish head over an amber to brown body. Smell is just a little amped in spicy English hops, but again, a slight peaty note of northern brown malt. Taste is interesting and somewhat complex. Light carbonation mouthfeel, still has brown malt as it major taste component. A bit of smokiness. Hops are a bit earthy, a flash or two of mint, and some sweet orange. A slight edge of sourness, like some staled beer was blended in, Guinness style. So, despite the naming, it’s more malty than we expect from IPAs, especially we who are used to American hop bombs. But a distinctive, slightly different statement of UK beers.

Bottle @ home. Clear, burnt orange appearance with a white head that disappears in no time. Medicinal, herbal hoppy, horrible aroma. Toasty malty, herbal hoppy, horrible macro flavor. One of the worst beers I’ve ever had and definitely the worst IPA I’ve ever had.

12 oz bottle from Country Club Liquors. Nose is vegetal and floral with a hint of toffee. Clear light amber with a small beige head. Flavor is lightly bitter with some caramel and a slight peppery spices. Tastes much better than it smells.

Draft: woody, smoky, almost like barbecue aroma, but it’s hard to tell in this restaurant setting. Clear copper thin head, not all that "pale". Distinct cherry and vanilla flavor. Toffee appears when warm. No transitions at all. As David Byrne might say, "Same as it ever was". The Summer from Newcastle was nice. this was underwhelming, especially for a style replete with stellar examples.

Sample at the 2011 Fall NOVA Beerfest, 10/22/11. Pours a clear amber color with a medium sized frothy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of floral and minty hops with a fruity finish. The taste is earthy, floral and fruity notes with a caramel malt finish. Medium bodied.
