(Previously called Malefactor and before that Gilgamesh) Developed as a stronger version of a Flanders-style Red Ale, Crimson is our only sour aged in bourbon barrels that have been previously used to age beer at least once. This creates petite notes of bourbon character, and darker, charred wood character. Crimson also undergoes a turbid mash, with a portion of flaked maize being boiled with the rest of the malt bill, including Vienna and caramel malts. A different cocktail of microorganisms are involved in fermentation, which creates sour notes, and hints of cherry pie. Crimson is aged for up to 8 months or more before packaging.

Small cream head over brown-orange beer, veiled. Vinous, fruity, deep spirit aroma's, maybe Bourbon, but also brandy, fortified wine. Sweet-sour and really portwine-like. Finish has a fine, nice fruity acidity, discreet, but perfect for balancing. Here the Bourbon is slightly more plausible. Feels as slightly diluted portwine. Backthroat serious alcoholheat. Not very carbonated. Superb beer, amazing. I agree with " sour red ", NOT with " Flanders-style ".

The Aromas are fruity vinegar and a little bit Floral. Flavors are Like Nose, sweet tart with hints of Funk and whiskey at the end. The whiskey comes on stronger with some warmth into the Finish. Good body although I'm not sure the barrel aging really is an asset.

On keg at Brewdog Lothian Rd, Edinburgh. Appearance - amber with light lacing. Nose - funky oak and vinous notes, maybe a melange if tart red fruit skd citrus. Taste - more vinous and red wine vinegar notes, again with the woody edge. Palate - medium bodied but very tight and concentrated. Dry tangy finish which is long. Overall - excellent!

Bottle. Color: Orangish amber, off-white head. Aroma: Sweet and sour cherries, caramel. Taste: Moderate to medium sour and moderate sweet, malty, caramel and cherry notes. Light bitterness. Notes of wood and Bourbon, mostly at finish. Hints of vanilla. Pretty sweet for a Flanders Red. Slightly warming mouthfeel at finish. Medium to over medium body, below average carbonation. Nice.

Bottle. A- Mild tartness, cherry, subtle funk, oak. A- Dark red color, dark liquid, off whire head. T- Oak, tart, cherry, mild funk. P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, balanced finish. O- Pricey as crap but at least I finally got an Upland sour. Does it meet hype? That's debatable. It is good? Yes, it is. Bourbon aging adds more of a vinous oaky flavor than anything else. Fair amount of cherry and a touch of funky. Fairly tart. Pretty good.
