So what about this single hop Chinook beer? It was our first beer brewed, very simple, Pale and Special B malts, Chinook Hops and Nottingham ale yeast. Sounds a little bit like a best bitter? Well we aimed for 7.2% and hit 7.4%, figured about 100IBU would just about do it. So not quite a best bitter more an imperial best bitter! Or as we call it a Boring Brown Beer.

Bottle from Birratrovo, Como; batch 0001, bottled Feb 2013, bb Feb 2016
Gusher. Pours a dark brown color with large frothy head, not persistent. The aroma mixes dark caramel with English yeast; some soil and dust. Good body strength; it has too much carbonation; the flavor turns too much to the dark side; dark caramel and some more heavily roasted malt; the bitterness deriving from the dark malts accentuates too much the one from the hops resulting excessive; dusty and roasty final.
I don’t see why using such a base beer for a single hop series. Elephant in a china shop.

Bottle from Cotteridge Wines, Birmingham. Poured a deep brown treacle colour with a huge frothy tan head and lots of carbonation. This was a lively beer! The aroma is surprisingly very yeasty with lots of that Belgian malt which really shines through. The hops are not so evident. The flavour is super strong bitter with a rich malty, liqourice palate and a nice lingering bitter finish. Well worth tracking down. I think the Belgians could learn a thing or two about flavour from this too.

Bottle picked up at ’Jacks’, Westholme Stores, Goring-on-Thames, Oxon. Consumed at a wonderful house in Appleton, Oxon, Saturday 31st August 2013 Pours very dark briwn with a large slightly sticky off-white head. Fruity full on ESB type beer with the malts, hops and body of this beer all giving the feelibg that it is an ESB on steriods and ramped up to 11. Caramel and dark slightly sticky fruits complete the picture for me of an interesting if rather complex brown beer. A6 A4 T7 P4 Ov13 3.4
