A few times a year we cut Dan loose to brew whatever he chooses, uncensored, uncut, unplugged. Always handcrafted, the bottle you hold is brewed for the adventurous soul. This is a very limited edition and we make no promises to ever brew this style again.

Flemish monks brewed the first Abt. A voluptuous temptress they named for their Monastery Abbot. Belgian Dark Candi Sugar encourages the decadence of rum, raisin dark chocolate and sherry like fruit tones to conspire happily in almost 20° Plato. Rich and full bodied this is one to lie down or if you are bold enjoy now, but take your time - linger. This beer cries to be sipped and enjoyed.

Refrigerated bottle poured into a trappist glass. Pours a mahogeny with crimson hue small beige head that dissapates quickly. Aroma is caramel and toffee. Medium lacing, good carbonation, and light syrupy texture. Taste is dark candy sugar, fig, some raisin, some alcohol, and a hint of toffee. The alcohol is not cover as well as the best belgians, but this is an excellent example of an abt, way to go New Glarus.

Bottle shared by badnewsbeers. Deep orange/red/brown translucent body, no head. Nose of dark fruits, bitter spice, and bread pudding, thin and wispy. Rather thin body, allowing alcohol to make the first strong impression; leathery and peppery with dark fruitskin, hints of banana, and clove, finishing with hints of cardboard. Lacking both subtlety and potency, drinks like a flabby amber ale with esters. A rare miss for New Glarus.

12oz bottle pours a totally transparent, deep copper amber with a thin, creamy, beige head. Strong fruity, estery aroma, apples, rum, orange marmalade, light coconut, candy sugar, creme soda. Flavor is sweet, malty, orange jam, caramelized candy sugar, raisins, a little chocolate, apple brandy, pears. Full bodied, lightly dry finish. It’s neat when you see NG adapt their German techniques to non-German beer styles. Not the greatest quad I’ve ever had, but nice, drinkable, and looks great.

12 ounce bottle courtesy of blutt59. Thanks! Pours a clear ruby color with a medium tan head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of raisins, bready and yeasty notes, berries and cinnamon. The taste is bready, spice, raisins and a mild hoppiness. Medium bodied.

Bottle thanks to the guys at the FULL Pint. Pours with a hazy brown body with a lasting off-white head. Aroma of currants, raisins, brandy, alcohol, bread and chocolate. Taste is quite boozy, sherry, raisins, rum, currants, and fig. Lingering chocolate. Very warming. Creamy mouthfeel. Nice beer, but feels bigger than 9.6%

12oz bottle shared by csbosox. Gentle pour produces no head. Color is a dark but clear cola-brown. Aroma is very leafy and all in my face. Light Belgian sweetness but absolutely not sweet a sweet and alcoholic Quad made by so many other American producers. That leafy, herbal character annoys me though. Flavor is dry, which is good and only lightly leafy (which is good as well). The flavor is well constructed, no alcoholic burn, and a nice light prune in the finish. Need to reduce the leafy/herbal character in the nose.

Interesting beer, with some very pronounced hints of raisin, chocolate, and other fruits in the flavor. Pours a dark, brownish-black, with little head. Some sourness. Interesting aromas. Smooth finish. Warming. This is one beer that might be even better after the bottle has sat for awhile.

Poured from 12 oz bottle, picked this up while at the New Glarus Brewery, enjoyed after a long 10 mile run. Aroma consists of the dark candi sugar described by the brewery, Belgian yeast is also apparent but it’s mostly sweet. Appearance is like cola, rather dark brown with a thin head. Taste is fantastic, great balance between the candi sugar, yeast, and malts, as well as dark fruit and a hint of chocolate. Great stuff!
