5.6-6.3% abv. Malted barley. This started out as a recipe based on one from the Barclay Perkins brewery from 1855. We’ve tempered the roast character of the original recipe with some chocolate and crystal malts, but the main difference is that this is hopped in the way we would hop our pale ales and IPAs – late kettle additions and dry hopping. The result is a dark brown beer that promises coffee and cocoa, but then the hops bring lightness, brightness and fruit.

Bottle. Waitrose. 5.5%. Instant new contender for best supermarket beer available. Not far off black. Beautiful tan swede. Nose is all charred citrus and bitter earthy ashy well done granary bread malts. Taste has a bitter chocolate sweetness and a good dose of charred grapefruit bitterness. Silky and full on the palate, to the tune of a nitro beer. Lingering moderate bitterness to finish. Holy shit.

Bottle at home in Hackney - picked up from the brewery taproom. Pours rich brown-black with a tight, creamy mocha topping. Super smooth, rich dark malts, coffee, pine, baking cocoa, grapefruit peel. Medium bodied with massaging carbonation and velvety texture. Perfectly balanced finish, bittersweet cocoa, more ideal piney-citrusy hop accents. Masterclass.
