Bottle. This is just called Black rather than Black Velvet. Appearance - dark brown to black with a lovely fawn head. Nose - light pine but predominantly caramel shortbread. Taste - more nice biscuit and caramel notes. On the finish there’s a little smoke and even charcoal. Palate - medium bodied with a decent yet crunchy texture and a long dry crunchy finish. Overall - a nice porter. A hopped stout even. Complex for the ABV.

Many thanks to Rian for this bottle! Smooth malty nose. The beer starts smooth but intense. Round floral, fresh and smooth. Bitter with not too much sweetness, dry dusty malty, hints of roast, round but not too much character there. Hints of grain, ok.

Bottle from the brewer’s own stall at the Thame Food Festival. Brown with a thick beige head. Light chocolate raisins balanced against lots of wood. Some underlying toffee makes it mellow, whilst at the same time tasty. Another great beer fron XT.

Cask at the Bell, Waltham St Lawrence. Pitch black with a ring of beige head, and a bright cherry red gleam when held to the light (on a sunny afternoon in the pub’s garden); aroma of richly roasted malts and vinous fruit; velvety smooth in the mouth, with deeply roasted malts giving a toasty taste with just a trace of chocolate; then a sustained bitterness, and a very dry ending. Very good indeed.
