Legend has it that 1,000 years ago, the Jews of Prague were saved from a marauding mob by a monster created in the private study of the great rabbi of the city. So big, so horrific, when spotted by the approaching peasants they turned on their heels and ran. When the threat had diminished, the Golem of Prague was escorted back to the Rabbi’s study where it is said he continues to stand watch to this very day. What was the secret that turned this mountain of clay into the fearsome, living and breathing Golem? Whatever it was, it must have been REALLY, REALLY BIG. The GOLEM – Each keg a different monster. First batch at 9.5%, as of 2013 at 12%.

Iced version of Dancing Camel India Pale Ale.

Bottle bought at the Brewpub in July 2013. (12% alcohol) A bit hazy dark orange with a white head. Quite a lot of perfume and candy in this one. Not as hoppy and fruity as expected. The cabonation was soft and the body was medium. Drinkable but nothing special.

Handpump. Hazy amber. No head. Aroma is a bit minty, maybe some light dark notes like chocolate, but they are understated. Sweetish, veerying towards barley wine (it’s actually iced IPA). Has some abv to dry out an otherwise sticky finish. Decent, if a little unstructured.

Draught at the brewery (not really the regular Golem. Normally Golem is an iced version of their IPA that is blended down to around 10% with un-iced IPA - this rating is for the unblended 13.25% iced IPA). Pours roast red and viscous with minimal head. The nose has powerful notes of brandy, honey and orangey hops. Sweet and fruity, full bodied and waming. Dense, viscous and powerful with plenty of raisin and caramel. Still elegant with long piney bitterness.

Draught at the brewery. Acording to the brewer this version maybe closer to 9%. Small and stable creamy head, deep intense amber colour, aroma of barnyard and hops. Flavours of plum, apricot, dried fruits such as figs and dates and some cinamon spiciness in the back. bitterness starts out moderate, but intensifies as the beer warms up. Aftertaste is quite sour and long. The body is suprisingly not to overwhelming for such a strong beer and the alcolhol is kept in check. very good and certainly not middle of the road. Keep on experimenting David.
