Barrel-Aged Barley Wine

Our 2021 Barley Wine has been aged in Caribbean Rum Barrels for 10 months as well as 6 months in Tawny Port and Bourbon Barrels. It was then blended with additional Barley Wine, and Abbey Quad to become King Tide. They say less is more, but in this case more is definitely more.

King Tide floods the palate with flavours of hazelnut, almond, cacao, mandarin orange, burnt molasses, and a suggestion of baking spice. The barrels come to the forefront, but they rest neatly atop complimentary flavours from the Abbey Quad and Barley Wine. All of the components have their moment to shine as the blend shifts and evolves on the palate.

Can from The Gull, North Vancouver
Dark mahogany colour, compact head. Aroma of dark fruits, caramel, wine sauce. Good body strength; it has the flavour of many American Barley Wines, more caramel than malt, it has a vibrant vinous note, stewed fruits, grape jelly, and alcohol warmth.
Well made.

Poured from 473mL can. Clear-ish amber with small beige head. Toffee and caramel with feint rum note, gentle wood, background of mild dried fruit, a slight nuttiness.

Dark amber. Not much head. There's caramel, figs, a little candied orange. On the palate, similar caramel, toffee sort of malts, medium bitterness, more of that candied orange, with a hint of almond, walnut, it's fruity but balanced. Complex in the sense that there's a lot going on. It sort of comes together, though. Not magically, but I like it.

473 ml can. Pours a very dark mahogany color with moderate head that settles fairly quickly. Aromas of caramel, bready malts, oaky rum, soft bourbon and dark fruit. Flavors of dry caramel, sweet bourbon, soft oaky port, fruity rum, raisins and doughy malts. Lots going on. Warm oaky finish which seems to be from the rum…
