A DEEPLY SATISFYING RED ALE

With a hint of spice from the rye and richness from the red crystal malt, Rhode Island Red is a deeply satisfying ale.

Cask at Harkers Arms, Chester. Pours “bitter brown” with a small off-white head. Quite a mixture in the aroma, malts, autumn fruits and dried apricots. In the mouth it is sweet and creamy but with an underlying bitterness. Flavour has malts, traditional hops, nuts and a hint of spices. Berry fruits come in later and are the mainstay of the finish. Not at all bad.

Foamy off white head stayed on a well carbonated reddish brown body. Spiced fruit, berry & malt aroma. Medium bodied, tingly with a clean back. Malt, spices, berry, pine & tangy citrus tastes with a long bitter finish. Nice one!

Bottle from Homebrew Bottle Shop, Oxton in Birkenhead. Appearance - deep amber to red with a nice fluffy head. Nose - dried cherry and orange. Light nuts. And some biscuit. Taste - tart red fruit going into orange, possibly cranberry. Nuts at the back again. Palate - medium bodied with a crunchy texture. Dry crunchy finish. Nice taper. Overall - while it's a bit challenging, it's complex and the challenge eventually gives back it's reward.

Cask @ The Excelsior, Liverpool. Copper-red, but more of the former, with a thin head. Quite sweet with berry fruit in its slightly sugary nose, with the same but less stated in its taste.
