09-on tap-pours a thin tan head and mahogany color. Aroma is medium/dark malt-caramel, dark fruit, wood/bourbon. Taste follows.

Neat faux ceramic painted bottle, corked and caged, 2009 vintage: Abundant hot bourbon aroma, but good quality bourbon I must add. Walnuts, shorttbread, pecans, and maple syrup are also very prominent on the nose. Crystal clear garnet brown, thick yellow head. Dates and figs initially. with a surge of smooth bourbon at midpalate. Finishes with oak, cherries, and cream. Body is a tad too thin for the style and I tend to like thinner barleywines. My son and I both spontaneously picked up on a mild anesthetic effect in the back of our throats after drinking it. He asked me to add that. Exquisite. North Coast obviously went to great lengths to craft and brew this beer and it came out wonderful. Move over Old Rasputin, this may be North Coast’s best creation.

2009 vintage. Pours. Pours hazy reddish brown color with almost no head. Aroma of bourbon, caramel, vanilla and oak. Sweet caramel flavor with loads of bourbon. A little vanilla and a hint of oak. Medium to full body with almost no carbonation. A little better than the original but much more expensive.

Pours ruby-tinged mahogany into a snifter. Off-white head crackles and recedes to nothing. Bourbon, vanilla and marinade aromas. Sweet vanilla, licorice, soy and spices upfront turning to a lasting maple and oak finish.

Sample from a 2009 bottle from Bevmo Greenbrae, shared at One Funky Afternoon at Jackie O’s on 04/02/2011: The beer pours a mostly clear brown with a hint of garnet color around the edges. Medium thin tan head that recedes steadily, and partial rings of lacing. The aroma is very bourbon-forward, along with notes of malt and vanilla. Rich body with a boozy character and flavors of sweet malt, oak, vanilla and caramel. The finish is oaky with a lingering malty aftertaste. Honestly I wish I had hung on to this one a while longer but it was still pretty good.

2009, from Skyview. A simple barleywine but one of the best I have had in some time. Aroma has alcohol and malt. Flavor is sweet with, surprisingly, coconut. Hops are in there, but this is more of a sweet, rather than bitterly hopped barleywine.

2009 vintage, 500ml bottle. Pours a hazy, copper amber with a thin, white head. Nose is boozy, raisins, orange, herbal, oak, vanilla. Flavor is sweet, caramel, brown sugar, oak, whiskey, raisins, rum. Full bodied, sticky finish.

Bottle c&c from Beverages 4 Less in Santee. Opened with a pop. Pours a clear dark ruddy copper with a 3 finger frothy tan head that was very transient. Aromas of dark fruit, oak and bourbon are nigh engulfing. Near full body. Starts sweet. Then it goes woody/oaky. Then the bourbon/vanilla take over. It finishes kind of confusing. One heck of a sipper.

500mL bottle, pours dark mahogany with small tan head. Intense aroma of bourbon, dark dried fruits (figs, dates), treacle/toffee and slight burnt caramel. Flavour initially reveals the treacle/toffee and burnt caramel, and follows with bourbon, oak, vanilla and light molasses. Slight alcohol burnt, but very well incorporate for the ABV (13.16%). An exceptional treat.
