This Smoked Dark Lager is a collaboration between Able Baker and Juxta Nomad. Juxta is the protege of our head brewer, and now the two have combined powers again, bringing you a unique classic style.

*****
Able Baker and Juxta bringin' it back to the old school! REALLY old school, like 11th century Bamberg old, around when Matt Marino (Head Brewer of Able) was just a wee little tike. More than 50% of the malted barley in this classic dark lager was smoked over beechwood for an unmistakably clean smoke character, and mellowed by a balanced grist of melanoidin-rich base malts and just a touch of roast.

Dark brown, not much head. Lots of smoke on the nose. Smokey palate, some sweet malts. So not a lager brewery and it shows…but that said the base isn’t all that far off. A bit yeasty, a bit gloppy but overall a good effort.

On tap @Able Baker. Short pour they swear is 6oz, sitting on their concrete patio. Black, sweaty, still. Slight hot dog spice, but continuing into mostly smoked beef territory. Mmm, serious charred steak fat. Subtle sweetness, light acid, crispy fries, soft bread. Nothing odd. Acidic finish. Thin, moderate abv, needs actual fat renderings. Great.
