Samuel Adams continues to expand their Small Batch Series in 2012. On the schedule is Verloren, and gose. There aren’t a lot of U.S. brewers making a gose, especially a brewery as large as Boston Beer. That’s probably why they dubbed it “Verloren” or “lost” beer . (It’s Dutch.) The style originated in Goselar, Germany in the 18th century. Gose became very popular the adjacent city of Leipzig, Germany due to a lot of local breweries brewing the style. Gose all but died out during WWII due to brewery closings. Expect this beer to have a touch of sourness, with notes of lemon & salt.

A link to the ales of Saxony that had all but vanished, Gose is a peculiar yet captivating brew. With a base of an unfiltered wheat ale, it’s vivid and refreshing yet also has a softness to it. The flavor is brought to life by an unexpected touch of salt for a mineral quality, and coriander for a peppery spice. The result is an unusual and delicate brew that’s full of flavors to discover. Batch #1

Bottle 75 cl. Courtesy of thgr81_us. Pours a cloudy golden with a white head leaving a discreet lacework. Interesting perfumy aroma. Medium body, rather sweet fruitiness, a little honeyish and again perfumy. Interesting and enjoyable - but a Gose? More a Belgian Wit. No real saltiness for sure. 150313

Bottle shared at CBC - Clerkenwell, London. Many thanks to Jack for bringing this along. Pours cloudy gold with soft, white head. Lots of sweet dough here, some orange. Medium sweet flavor with more orangey citrus, doughy bread, straight sugars. Light to medium bodied with average carbonation. Sweet finish with yet more orange and dough, along with notes of pineapple. Pleasant if quite simple.

Bottle, thanks to jackl. It pours hazy golden amber with a small off-white head. The nose is doughy, soft sweetness, sweet orange/ tangerine and a touch of Irn Bru. The taste is malty, bread, wheat, faint pepper, salty edge and herbal notes with a dry finish. Medium body and light carbonation. Not necessarily a bad beer, just not much to it. Pretty bland really...

Location: 22 oz bottle from Buy Rite, 12/26/12

Aroma: The aroma is a little lemony, with some wheat/yeast, and some notes of tropical fruits too
Appearance: A hazed orange pour with a fizzy off-white head that dissipates quickly leaving no lace
Flavor: The taste is medium sweet, it is fairly fruity, with some spices notes, and a hint of salt
Palate: The body is light-medium, it drinks pretty easily, with a soft carbonation and a fairly clean feel
Overall Impression: Overall, I didn't love this one. It's a nice attempt, it's not a bad beer or anything. It's fine. It has a good amount of sweetness, with some spice, especially in the end palate, but where it fell off for me is the lack or bitterness or sourness to balance out the sweetness. It's plenty drinkable, but I certainly didn't love it.
