It’s Homecoming Year and there’s a decidedly Scots edge to some of my brewing in January-February. I kicked it all off a couple of weeks ago by brewing an ’export’ style ale, full of malty sweetness with a smidge of underlying hoppy goodness. Wanting all those wonderful flavours that my maltster creates, without overdoing some of the more the demanding ones, and, of course, keeping the ’traditional’ butterscotch notes to an acceptable minimum (not my favourite beer atribute) kept me focused in the design and delivery of the beer.

Cask at the Crosse Keys, JDW, London. Pours dark, clear red-brown with a light, off-white foam head. Light nose, some faint toasted malts. Light sweet flavor, all minerals and mild smoke. Lightly sweet. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Some lightly smokey malts to finish with more minerals and faintly fruity sugars. Odd, and not particularly impressive.

Cask handpull at Man of Kent, Rochester. Beautiful very very dark brown colouur, lasting beige head. Decent malts, tastes a bit like a Caledonian beer. Soft in mouth, slightly sweet on the end. Good interpretation of the style. Little bit watery on finish. Some dry malt, like a malty cake on finish. Not much hop. OK.
