Bottle. A very dark brown beer topped by a dense, light beige head leaving lacings. The aroma has some vanilla hints, with dark chocolate, coffee hints, some molasses and licorice as well as a roasted touch. Rather dry on the palate, with a fine carbonation level. Salty licorice, molasses, roasted malts and dark chocolate in the flavor, a fine bitterness chiming in. Lasting roasted finish with salty licorice. A bit drier than I’d prefer, but still a fine beer. 141213

Pours black with a tan head. Aroma has notes of roasted malt, chocolate, citrus, pine, herbal and alcohol. Taste is medium sweet and medium bitter with a long slightly warm, roasted, coffee, chocolate, caramel and bitter finish. Body is full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

Big light brown creamy longlasting head. Aroma is slightly fresh grassy, fresh hops, pine needles, rubber, leafs, roasted grain, coffee, dark malts, grass, minerals, burnt caramel, bark. Taste is kind of sour-ish grassy, leafs, pine needles, hops, grass, alcohol, sour coffee, dark malts, burnt caramel, soil, bark. Medium to longlasting bitterness, dry mouthfeel. Fair enough.

Bottle from Earl of Essex drunk on a train. Black beer lasting tan head. Chocolate sponge cake and spicy slightly alcoholic aroma. Rather good I thought. Simple. Chocolate. Light cocoa chocolate. Then some heat on the finish. Simple and doesn’t keep the heat out of the finish. Simple plain strong chocolate sponge porter. But fine.

Bottle and beer dudes tasting at Appellation Wines Comely Bank, thanks to BenH again I think. Appearance - opaque brown/black with a thin crema head. Nose - booze, tannins and fruitcake. Taste - booze & tannins again. There’s a finish that is reminiscent of burnt raisins and liquorice. Palate - medium to full bodied, big tangy and boozy texture and a reasonably balanced finish. Overall - another beast of a porter/stout from BenH. Interesting and enjoyable.

33 cl bottle @ home, bbe 2014/12/31. As good as black color. Light borwn dense rocky head with good retention and lacing. Aroma’s: hard roasted malts, some fruity sourness, hints of vanilla. Hard roast, almost burned retronasal, a bit drop/laurel/bay leaves, hoppy acidity, alcohol. Flavor is moderate sweet, roasted, ashy, coffee and some fruit. Rather strong alcohol feel. Medium bodied. Finishes somewhat ashy, roasted, moderate bitter. Quite nice!
