On November 6, 2010 Jackie O’s released its first rum barrel aged beer, Oil of Aphrodite. The rum barrel that we received, imparted such a distinct and decadent character, I knew that we had to give that same barrel another fill. We have done this in the past with bourbon barrels and found that the bourbon character is very subtle and the oak flavors tend to be more pronounced. We crossed our fingers and filled the rum barrel with Dark Apparition, hoping to further harvest the amazing wealth of rum character that barrel had initially offered.
I checked on it after it’s initial 3-month aging period, and was delighted to discover the same incredible flavors from the first fill. Most noticeable was the candied orange character, although not as strong, it was still an integral part of the beer. 30 Madagascar vanilla beans were added to the barrel. The beer and beans aged in the barrel for an additional 2 months before being bottled. Vanilla Bean Rum Barrel Dark Apparition is a beautiful beer that embodies many bold flavors and aromas without being over the top. Enjoy with friends and loved ones.

2011 bottle 12 of 225. Pour black with tan head. Nose/taste vanilla, oak, milk chocolate, coffee, roasted chocolate, wood and light rum. Medium body. The beer has matured in the past year into a silky smooth vanilla/chocolate stout with subtle complexity from the rum barrel aging process.

Bottle shared by badnewsbeers. Deep opaque brown-black body, thin light brown ring. Nose of vanilla beans, cinnamon, and oak; rich. Body primarily vanilla in addition to tannic oak, charred malts, and prominent chocolate wafers. Relatively thin with light tartness. A bit hot and hollow.

Another Jackie O’s beauty courtesy of markwise. Pours murky mahogany with thin mocha head. The aroma is big blended brash boldness with a drool inducing level of burnt caramel, molasses and sweet vanilla that beckon me to drink with haste, but I resist for a moment. I also get modest levels of nuttiness, sweet smooth rum and booze at the end of the draw. Smells of pure yum! The taste is thin in body with chocolate brownie, soft wood notes, sweet smooth rum, a dash of dark chocolate, molasses, burnt malts and yummy caramel candy too. The flavors are many but the beer as a whole is wonderful. Nice stuff.

Bottle via someone at the BA Speedway release. Pours with a black body and minimal head. Aromas are sweet, chocolate, vanilla, cream soda, soil, rum, brown sugar, coffee, light cotton candy. Flavors are quite sweet as well with a lot of vanilla, chocolate, coffee, fudge, and rum. A light tanginess to it that is a little off putting (along with a huge sweetness). Full bodied, light carbonation.

Bottle thanks to Brad shared at the post EBF tasting. Poured black with a brown head that dissiapted quickly to the edges. Aroma had a nice rum note with roasted malts, dark grains and just a slight hint of a vanilla. Flavor had a some sweet chocolate, with roasted malts, vanilla and the rum coming on in the finish. A bit sweet.

Sample at the Jackie O’s Bottle Sale/ Stout and Big Beer Fest on 02/05/2011. The beer pours blackish-brown with a thin foamy beige head that dissipates quickly. Partial rings of lacing. The aroma is a vanilla/chocolate twist with a bit of booze in the background. Medium body with flavors of white chocolate raisins, oak and malt. The finish is a little thinner with a woody dark frut aftertaste, Above average overall.
